deck the halls with…nothing?

I wrote the tune below to describe the many reasons why I actually have no problem saying “happy holidays,” instead of Merry Christmas. Aside from being ridiculously overwhelmed with work during December, I also feel like Christmas celebrations before Christmas dilute the joyful impact of the day. There are so many other interesting holy days, feast days and other cool events which precede Christmas, and which deserve their own commemoration. I will confess that while I certainly enjoy sending out unique handmade cards in the weeks surrounding Christmas, I usually don’t begin shopping or creating until the 26th. The post-festal sales and seasonal work slow-down are two sources of motivation. I truly believe that Christmas begins on the 25th. True Christmas should be extended for as long as local custom indicates it is possible.

May your windows be unobstructed by artificial pine; may no men with hoary beards and red suits grace your chimney until the truly acceptable time.

To the tune of Deck-the Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of Nada
because it’s not Christmas yet
Find out where’s the next posada
because it’s not Christmas yet
Juan Diego, Guadalupe
because it’s not Christmas yet
Chick-pea soup for ol’ St. Lucy
because it’s not Christmas yet.

Strike a match and light the Parols
because it’s not Christmas yet,
Liturgists say don’t sing carols
because it’s not christmas yet
Violet stoles, rose for gaudete,
because it’s not Christmas yet,
blue if you’re a Can-ay-day-an
because it’s not Christmas yet.

Hide the wassail for a reason,
because it’s not Christmas yet
just enjoy the advent season
because it’s not Christmas yet,
Trees too soon are self-defeating,
because it’s not Christmas yet,
So I’ll just say season’s greetings
because it’s not Christmas yet.
